Mary Joan Boyd Payne, 84, of Floydada, Texas, left this world peacefully on December 5, 2016 at her recent home at Shepherd's Meadow Assisted Living Center in Floydada.
A celebration service for her home-going will be held Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the First Baptist Church of Floydada, Texas at 2:00 pm. A grave-side service will follow at the Floyd County Memorial Park Cemetery in Floydada. A time of visitation for friends & family will be held on Friday, December 9 from 5-8 pm at the Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Floydada.
All arrangements are under the care of Moore-Rose Funeral Home.

Jo was brought into this world on January 4, 1932 in Bemis, Tennessee. She was the firstborn of 4 to her father, Joshua Truman Boyd, and mother, Mattie Lee Jones Boyd, later to be, Wester. As a student, Jo attended the California Vocational Nursing School in Los Angeles and became an LVN for 7 years, before returning to west Texas in 1950 and attending Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, where she graduated with a BA in Elementary & Secondary Education, with a minor in English.
Jo was a gifted singer and piano player which led her to meet her teacher/preacher husband to be, Hollis C. Payne. They were married in Arney, Texas in 1959, where she would become a pastor's wife for 43 years. She also taught school in Floydada, Texas as a bilingual 1st and 5th grade teacher for 23 years where she received the Outstanding Teacher Award. During her time in west Texas she was active in the 1950 WBU Study Club & the Wayland International Choir. She also enjoyed being a part of the Floydada Whirlwind Sams Travel Club, Jubilee Singers & Six Dots and a Dash singing groups. After retiring in 1986, she moved with her husband to the little town of Vigo Park, Texas where she continued serving as a church musician and pastor's wife, before returning to Floydada in 1992.

Jo was preceded in death by her husband H.C. Payne in May of 2002, as well as her brother, Larry T. Boyd of Beaumont, Tx. She is survived by her children, a daughter, Tammy Payne Aten of Granbury, Texas and a son, Hollis Joe (Joey) Payne of Plainview, Texas and 4 grandchildren, Joshua Lee Aten & Tamara LeBrooke Aten of Granbury and Breanna Kay & Kristen Leigh Payne of Plainview, a sister, Janey Westrich of Chandler, Arizona and a brother, Edgar L. Boyd of Shallowater along with many nephews and nieces…and even those cousins who would call her Auntie Jo & Sis.
